National Environmental Management System Initiative (NEMSI)

In the late 1990s, the Canadian Pork Council identified the need for a national environmental system standard that would facilitate environmental risk assessment and cohabitation between hog farms and local rural residents. To achieve this, a standardized Environmental Management System ( EMS ) for the Canadian pork industry was developed.

In July 2000, the CPC Board of Directors approved the development of a national, voluntary and consensus-based EMS standard. The Canadian Pork Council contracted the Canadian Standards Association ( CSA ) to lead the development of the environmental management standard. Also crucial to its development was an EMS Technical Committee, comprised of 29 representatives from industry, federal and provincial governments, services, academia, and environmental protection groups.
